Research Interests:
Chemistry of the troposphere, trace gas measurement and instrumentation
development, chemical kinetic and mechanistic studies of atmospheric
oxidation
processes, and chemical kinetic modeling.
The major theme of my research involves the study
of chemical and physical processes affecting the fate of anthropogenic
and biogenic emissions and their impact on
global cycles of trace atmospheric constituents. These processes
are critical to our understanding of the "chemical climate"
and air quality and environmental impacts
on local to global scales.
Specific ongoing research programs relate to the
study of the chemical composition of the atmosphere and associated
reaction processes contributing to the oxidizing
capacity of the atmosphere. These processes have direct implications
on the formation of photochemical oxidants/ozone, aerosols and
other chemical species
capable of modifying the radiative (light absorbing and scattering)
properties of the atmosphere and acidify the environment.
Research studies include: 1) the development of
spectroscopic optical absorption, chemiluminescent instrumentation
and chromatographic techniques for the
measurement of trace atmospheric constituents; 2) intensive and
long term field measurement campaigns at Whiteface Mountain of
photochemical oxidants and
chemical species associated with the atmospheric photoxidation
cycle; 3) diagnostic analysis and modeling studies of atmospheric
processes using field measurement
data; and 4) the study of the chemical kinetic and mechanistic
pathways of elementary atmospheric reactions and the development
of reaction mechanisms of
polluted and clean atmospheres.
